International Students Guidelines | 2024/2025

1) What documents are required for a student to stay in Brazil?

a) CPF (Individual Taxpayer Registry - Cadastro de Pessoa Física):

  • Information on how to apply for a CPF in your country of origin is available HERE.
  • If you are far from a Brazilian consular office, apply online HERE and print out the application protocol.
  • Pick up the CPF at the Receita Federal office in Maringá, presenting the protocol.
  • If you have any questions, ask NAF/UEM for advice via WhatsApp +55 (44) 3011-4909 (service on Tuesdays and Thursdays).
  • Attention: If you cannot access the website, check that your cookies have been unblocked.
  • The CPF is essential for bureaucratic procedures in Brazil, such as opening a bank account, registering at the university and acquiring a local telephone number.

b) RNM (National Migratory Registration - Registro Nacional Migratório):

  • Fill in the application form on the Federal Police website HERE. You must have a CPF and an address in Brazil.
  • Make an appointment online HERE (Friday mornings only).
  • Go to the Federal Police in your destination city on the scheduled date and time.

If you have any difficulties, ask the ECI team or your student tutor for advice.

Please note: Provide your parents' names (father and mother) consistently on all documents requested.

 

2) What documents should I take to the Federal Police?

  • CPF.
  • Completed application form.
  • 3x4 photo (recent, color, white background).
  • E-mail address and telephone number.
  • Proof of residence in Brazil (electricity bill).
  • Passport (identification document).
  • Original visa form.
  • Proof of payment of the fee (2024: R$ 204.77, guide code 140120), which can be printed HERE after applying online.

 

3) How to open a bank account in Brazil?

  • Students who will receive financial aid from UEM must open an account within Banco do Brasil (001).

 

4) What documents do I need to open a bank account?

  • CPF (mandatory for banking in Brazil).
  • Passport (identification document).
  • Proof of residence in Brazil (electricity bill) - If the proof is not in your name, submit a declaration from the owner of the property, with a notarized signature or made on the website www.gov.br, along with a copy of the owner's identity document.
  • Proof of ties to UEM (registration or official document).
  • Temporary student visa.
  • Telephone number from a local.

 

5) What documents are needed to enroll at UEM?

a) All students must present:

  • Birth or marriage certificate.
  • Letter of acceptance (issued by UEM).
  • CPF.

b) Undergraduate mobility students:

  • Academic transcript from the university of origin.
  • Signed study plan with subject codes (provided by the course coordinator at UEM).

c) Master's/PhD students:

  • Certificate of completion of undergraduate/master's course.
  • Other documents may be requested by the Graduate Program or the Division of Academic Affairs (Diretoria de Assuntos Acadêmicos - DAA).

d) PEC-G students:

  • Consult the ECI for the list of required documents.

 

6) Where can I find information about the State University of Maringá (Universidade Estadual de Maringá - UEM) and the International Cooperation Office (Escritório de Cooperação Internacional - ECI)?

  • Visit the UEM and ECI websites.
  • Consult the International Student Guide in English, Spanish, French and Haitian Creole HERE.

 

7) Does UEM offer student accommodation?

  • No. UEM does not offer student accommodation or housing assistance.
  • Ask the ECI team to be added to the international students' WhatsApp group, where information about accommodation is shared, including vacancies in guest houses, fraternities, sororities or rentals via Airbnb.
  • The student tutor can help with information, but is not responsible for finding housing.

 

8) Does UEM offer food?

  • Yes. International students are entitled to three meals a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner) free of charge, from Monday to Friday, at the University Restaurant (Restaurante Universitário - RU).

9) Does UEM offer Portuguese courses?

  • Yes, face-to-face courses in Portuguese as an Additional Language (Português como língua Adicional - PLA) are offered free of charge to international students.
  • Mobility students are guaranteed places.
  • UEM also offers preparatory courses for the CELPE-BRAS exam (Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese for Foreigners).

11) Do I need to provide Life and Health Insurance?

  • Yes, insurance with coverage valid for the entire period of stay at UEM is mandatory (except for students in the PEC-G program).

 

Please note: On landing at São Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport (GRU), collect all your luggage and go through customs for immigration procedures. Then find out about your flight to Maringá.
